From timeless legends to modern masters, this list brings together 100 male actors who’ve left a real mark on film, ranked and grouped by era, with the role each one is best remembered for.
How We Ranked This List
A ranking of “the greatest actors of all time” is always partly a judgment call; no formula settles it completely. We built this list by weighing a mix of factors: Academy Award and BAFTA recognition, the size and consistency of an actor’s body of work, critical reputation among film historians, and how enduring or culturally iconic a signature role has become. Actors are grouped into four eras rather than ranked one through 100 in strict order, since comparing a 1950s stage-trained legend to a 2020s breakout talent on a single scale gets more arbitrary the more precisely you try to do it.
1–25: The Timeless Legends
These actors laid the foundation for what screen acting could be, and their signature performances are still the reference point new actors get compared against.

Honorable Mentions
Any list like this leaves people out. A few recent names worth watching who narrowly missed the cut: Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, 2023 Best Actor winner), Austin Butler (Elvis, 2022), and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022 Best Supporting Actor winner). As their bodies of work grow, expect this list to be revisited.
FAQs
Who is considered the single greatest male actor of all time?
There’s no single consensus pick, film historians and award bodies differ, but Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro are the two names that show up at or near the top of nearly every serious critics’ list, largely on the strength of their influence on how screen acting itself is taught and studied.
How was this list compiled?
We weighed major award recognition (Oscars, BAFTAs), critical and historical reputation, depth of filmography, and cultural staying power of an actor’s signature role, then grouped actors into four eras rather than forcing a single 1–100 order.
Does this list include actors who are still actively working?
Yes. The “Rising Greats & Global Talents” section is made up entirely of actors still building their careers, included for work they’ve already delivered rather than future potential.
Why isn’t [a specific actor] on this list?
A 100-name list of male actors alone leaves out plenty of deserving names by definition. See the Honorable Mentions section above for a few close calls, and check back, as this list gets revisited as careers develop.
