Gabbie Marshall’s Parents, Marne and Ernest Marshall
Gabbie Marshall was born to Ernest and Marne Marshall, both of whom were college basketball players in their time.
Ernest played basketball at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Business Administration. After his collegiate basketball career, he pursued higher education, obtaining a law degree from Indiana University Bloomington School of Law and an MBA from Indiana University.
Professionally, Ernest has built an impressive career and currently serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Eaton Corporation 1, a global power management company.
Marne played basketball at Aquinas College, a private liberal arts institution in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While specific details about her basketball career are limited, it’s evident that her involvement in collegiate athletics has been an inspiration to her daughter.
Growing up in a basketball household, Gabbie was surrounded by the game from an early age, learning the importance of hard work and perseverance from her parents.

“As I am nearing my last month in Iowa City, ready to take on the next chapter of my life, I have had lots of time to reflect on all the incredible memories I have made, opportunities I have been given, people I have met, and friendships that will last forever because of the game of basketball.”
After spending 18 years of her life playing basketball, she is stepping into a new role – pursuing a Master’s in Occupational Therapy at UNC. But while her playing days at Iowa may be over, she made it clear:
“Once a Hawk, always a Hawk.”
Would she ever return to the court in another capacity? Only time will tell.

Currently, Marshall is focused on pursuing her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at UNC (University of North Carolina). While she has not announced any plans to play professionally, she remains deeply connected to the game and the teammates she spent years competing alongside.
One of her most recent social media posts featured a reunion with Iowa teammate Kate Martin at Caitlin Clark’s jersey retirement ceremony, captioned “Reunited in Iowa.” It was a reminder that even though her playing days as a Hawkeye are over, the friendships and bonds she built will last a lifetime.
Gabbie Credited Her Coaches and Teammates
Gabbie has always credited her coaches and teammates for shaping her into the player she is today. She recalls learning how to lead and compete at a high level from older players during her freshman year.
“I didn’t start, but I learned a lot. I had older players that I got to learn from – how to be a leader, what it takes to be great and be a starter,” she said.
Her dedication paid off. Over the years, she became a key player for Iowa, contributing both on defense and offense. Her ability to step up in big moments, such as her seven three-pointers in a crucial tournament game, made her a fan favorite.
Coach Lisa Bluder has spoken highly of Marshall’s work ethic and resilience, acknowledging that even when she struggled, she never stopped believing in herself. “I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Bluder said.
And it wasn’t just her coaches who admired her. Her teammates, including Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin, shared a special bond with her, both on and off the court. Recently, Marshall posted a photo from Caitlin Clark’s jersey retirement ceremony with the caption “Reunited in Iowa”, highlighting their lasting friendship.
Raising Awareness for Cancer
Marshall isn’t just passionate about basketball – she’s also deeply involved in raising awareness for cancer. In an emotional post, she shared how her family came together to surprise her Grammy, who is battling cancer for the second time.
“While doctors may not prescribe it, I truly believe that love and laughter are powerful medicines,” she wrote. “The whole world needs love right now, and it starts with loving our own families.”
She encouraged others to join the fight by supporting CancerBrand, an initiative raising awareness and funds for cancer patients.
