The Charlotte community mourns the loss of Jane McAdams “Janey” Thompson, a vibrant and beloved young woman whose life was tragically cut short at just 20 years old.
Janey passed away on April 9, 2024, from complications of a blood clot that traveled to her heart, leaving behind a legacy of joy, passion, and an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Born and raised in Charlotte, Janey was known for her infectious energy and unwavering kindness. A graduate of Myers Park High School, she excelled both academically and athletically.
As a clarinet player in the wind ensemble and jazz band, and a four-year member of the varsity basketball and softball teams, Janey was a standout in every sense.
She was recognized as Female Athlete of the Year in 2022, a testament to her dedication and talent.
Her time at Myers Park was filled with cherished moments, from playing on the varsity teams to hanging out in the locker room with her teammates.
Those who knew her best remember her as the girl who brought laughter and fun wherever she went. Janey’s summers were spent as a lifeguard at Myers Park Country Club, where she became a favorite among the children, making it her mission to brighten their days.
After high school, Janey continued to shine at Wake Forest University, where she was a second-year biophysics major.
She attended Wake on a physics scholarship and was consistently on the dean’s list, a reflection of her intellectual curiosity and drive.
At Wake, she was more than just a student; she was a superfan of Wake Forest sports, attending every home game and cheering on her teams with unwavering enthusiasm.
Janey’s involvement on campus extended beyond academics and sports. She played intramural sports, transitioning to coaching after a knee injury in 2023.
Her love for Wake Forest was evident in her participation in various activities, including Wake Radio, the Tri Delta sorority, and the pre-dental health professional society.
Her friends fondly remember her as someone who embraced every aspect of college life, from the serious to the fun.
Janey’s presence was a gift to those around her. She was a loyal friend, known for her sense of humor and knack for finding the perfect gift.
Despite her many talents, Janey remained humble and kind, always putting others first.
Her love for puzzles, card games, trivia, and competitions was matched only by her love for the simple pleasures in life—long walks, good coffee, and time spent with family and friends.
Janey’s family, including her parents Bo and Scottie Thompson, her brother Hank, and her beloved dog Phyllis, are left with a profound sense of loss.
Her grandfather Ronald Stone, grandparents Tom and Barbara Thompson, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, along with countless friends, will forever remember the joy she brought into their lives.
Janey’s life, though brief, was filled with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the beauty in everyday moments.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, a reminder of the impact one person can have through kindness, humor, and an unquenchable zest for life.
